Welcome New Members!

Corbin Hawk

  • Found lots of other fun things he’s interested
  • Working on a cosplay right now – Emperor of Mankind
  • Also familiar with video editing and the wood shop

Announcements

Internets

  • Metamesh is “taking their company in a new direction”
    • Will be stopping all of our outgoing ports etc on the 22nd
  • Verizon FIOS came in to do some of the wire installation but they were unable to access parts of the building safely with just a ladder so they will be coming back on Wednesday with a bucket truck to finish the job
  • We might leave the Metamesh internet set up as it is now until Rob is back from vacation
    • Rob has left instructions on how to switch over to FIOS if we need to do it sooner
  • Verizon Foundation
    • Programs exist that can help non-profits do things like purchase computers and other tech-related things
    • Alisa reached out to enquire about how to be invited to apply for a grant to get reduced-cost internet access here, but their local grants specialist is on vacation
  • There may be some blips in the system while the turnover is happening

Shop clean

  • Sunday the 31st at 12:00
  • Rich will bring a weedwhacker
  • We’ll go through the usual notecard list of things to clean up
  • Downstairs bathroom sink’s drain is clogged up and needs cleaned out

Donation to Ukraine

  • Becky made the wire transfer of the Ukraine money to Maker Hub
    • She spent 4.5 hours at the bank trying to figure things out
    • The government has put Ukraine on the sanctions list because Russians and Belarusians are intercepting transfers
    • So far we haven’t heard that it has been rejected, but that’s still a possibility
    • Two alternate plans: use a Board member’s Visa, or use PayPal
      • We want there to be a paper trail, but we might have to cut some bureaucratic red tape to get it through
      • Treasurer is keeping track of every cent
      • Becky will show the PDF of the wire transfers to anyone who wants to see it

Alisa posts on Slack a lot

  • Alisa is awesome secretary and the main form of communication between the Board and the Slack, and so while she posts a lot it’s on behalf of the whole Board and should be listened to

Reimbursement

  • The Board is generally fine with reimbursing things that have been bought for the space, but you have to ask first before buying things – don’t just assume you’ll be paid back

Treasurer’s Report

  • Bank: $15,595.50
  • Paypal: $111.11
  • Part of this is from the $3500 donation for the air conditioner fund
  • This is a time in the year when there’s a bit more spending than usual
    • Higher electric bill
    • Members suspending memberships while traveling etc
    • The end of the month may fluctuate a bunch depending on when deposits are made

Old Business

Tustin Tot Lot

  • August 13
  • Beebo has brought all of the materials from the storage area downstairs for easy access
  • We do not have the wire or the crimps
    • Becky says Adam has the crimps
  • Alisa emailed Councilman Lavelle explaining what’s going on and asking him if he can get the City to come in before then to clean up parts of the playground that we are not responsible for (graffiti, vegetation, equipment maintenance, etc)
    • Alisa asked if he would be interested in hosting the block party
  • Hopefully this will turn into a fun event, but if not we will just find a few people willing to go over there some day and work on the fence
  • Simon needs to go in person to the bank to get the tot lot funds transferred over to current Board Members

Classes

  • Kiefer wants to know if there’s interest in having a welding class in August
    • Becky says that if there’s a class scheduled, it always gets filled
    • MIG class August 27
    • Have enough bulbs, need more wiring (get cords without a switch), have enough chain

Laser cutter

  • Software has been purchased
  • Everything except the final alignments have been done
  • Alex will try to come in next weekend to finish up the last bits, as Sean and Rob are both out of town, because it’s July and everybody is out of town
  • Hopefully this is the absolute last thing that needs to be done, but Alisa refuses to give any sort of time estimate lest we jinx it

Air conditioner

  • Current fund: $3845
    • We got a recent donation of $3500
  • Most promising units run around $1400 each and we’re looking to get two
    • While that sounds like we have more than enough more than enough right now, we still need some extra wiggle room for doing insulation of doorways and equipment
  • Nobody ever remembers to close the doors between the clean the dirty sides so it would be worth investing in doors that automatically close
    • Alisa feels that the best option would be restaurant-style doors that swing in both directions so people can push them open and they close behind them
    • Rich: “Considering the size of the room, I would question the importance of insulating the doorways terribly well; I would think even, like, a cheap inexpensive system like we have on the door going to the upstairs bathroom and locker room might be adequate”
      • Alisa doesn’t like this idea because she can’t get through with her wheelchair unless both doors open
  • There is a heated debate (pun intended) on whether or not it’s worth making the laser cutter air-tight so that the fan from that doesn’t blow all of the cold air outside
  • Also need to get insulation for the door leading to the upstairs area
  • Any leftover funds raised will go back into the general Hack fund

New Business

Doorbell

  • Currently the front door doorbell can’t be heard in the back of the shop and the back door doorbell can’t be heard in the front of the shop
  • We should get a dual-bell system where there’s two doorbells that make different sounds for the front vs back doors, and there’s two speakers so the clean side has one and the dirty side has one
  • Rich found a doorbell system on Amazon during that course of the meeting that only costs $20, so we will be able to accomplish this quickly and cheaply when we’re ready
