Upcoming Events

https://hackpgh.org/calendar

  • Computer Building class by Adam Longwill will be held Saturday, August 25th
  • Shop Clean will be held on Saturday, August 26th. Please attend if you can!
  • On September 16th, we will be holding a Block Party to kick off our work on the Tustin Tot Lot Revitalization!
  • We rescheduled the Red Cross' CPR/First Aid/AED training. Please let Becky know what dates work best for you so she can reschedule with the Red Cross. CW states that there may be a cheaper option for this type of training and we will look into this.
  • As always, shop tours and tool training takes place every Saturday and Monday evening starting at 7:30 PM.

Shop Updates

  • Thank you Lincoln Electric!
    • Lincoln Electric donated hundreds of items including welding supplies, coats, gloves, bags, helmets, and more!
  • Treasurer Report
    • We currently have $23,930.86 total in our account.
    • $700 of that is the Chad Elish scholarship fund, and we will need to decide how to allocate those funds soon. Generally, we'd like to offer a handful of three-month scholarships to local individuals.
  • Safety
    • Tools are dangerous! Our member Thomas got nicked by the table saw a few days ago. He is OK.
    • Safety is the greatest concern. You must have closed toed shoes and wear safety glasses while in the shop area.
      • If necessary, there are up-to-date first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and general "well-being" items available all around the shop.
  • Outreach
    • Tustin Tot Lot
    • Millvale Village Green Air
      • Went well! Next is on the 10th!
  • Shop Improvements
    • Shop area is looking good. We still need to work on it. Shop area is looking good. However, more work to do.

Dust Collection, Shelf moving, organization and purging things. There is a whiteboard on which small tasks are presented.

    • Tool Training from members other than the Board of Directors
      • Please help us out and volunteer to do tours and/or tool training
      • This conversation was started because there was a universal desire to have better documentation on how to properly use and maintain the tools and the shop in a major, visible way.
      • A suggestion was made that we form a committee to do this.
        • Update on said committee? This has fizzled out. All we ask is that people help out once in awhile. The Board of Directors are volunteers and have limited time.
    • Reminder... Clean up after yourselves. This is a safety issue!
  • Turners Anonymous
    • Turners Anonymous is a group of woodworking enthusiasts. Locally, they have about 100 people, mostly seniors, who meet in the Strip District. The Society for Contemporary Crafts is losing its lease and has to move. Turners Anonymous has to move as a result.
    • HackPGH may be able to host them.
    • We would give them free rent in exchange for very expensive equipment such as wood lathes. It's a mutually beneficial situation. We would get new members and tools and they would get a new home and access to newer tools (such as laser cutters) and potential members.
    • Turners Anonymous is also offering training for their tools to Hack members.
      • There are questions of liability and tool usage. We need to hammer out details.
      • CW Kreimer made a motion that we are interested in moving forward with the partnership between Turners Anonymous, pending discussions about details and liability.
        • The motion passed unanimously.
  • CNC
    • Sean, Bob, and others are still working on the CNC machine.
    • It was cutting successfully about two weeks ago.
    • Deadline to complete the CNC machine is now the end of September. After this deadline, we either dismantle the CNC machine or allow other members to work on it.
  • 3D Printers
    • Kossel and Dave's Printer is back. Chad's Printer is still messed up (Hardware Issue
    • Dave had spoken to a few people. One is Dave's, one is Chad's, and one is donated by Ryan. He proposes a rule that not just anyone can work on the 3D printer.
    • We ask that if you don't know how to use a 3D printer, please ask someone who knows how to use it. There are parts missing. Pay attention to the signs!
  • Power Racing
    • No updates as of now.
  • Dust collection System
    • CW will submit a budget so that we can obtain parts for the dust collection system.

Project Updates

  • There are no project updates at this time!

Recognition for AWESOMENESS

  • Lincoln Electric
    • Thanks for their generous donation!
  • Thanks to Chris for fixing our printer!
  • Thanks to Beebo for taking out the trash!
  • Thanks to CW for obtaining a printer ink donation!
