LEAD Balloon Project

This was our official launch for the Hackerspaces in Space competition.

Launch Location

Perkins Park, Akron, OH

Landing Location

North East of Canton, OH

Weather Conditions

High of 84° partly cloudy with winds gusting at 10-15mph.

Equipment

Aerial

Balloon

KCI 1000 from Kaymont.

Enclosure

Scavenged Styrofoam cooler.

Parachute

3.6' orange ripstop nylon round parachute with eight 7' lines to the payload. 5" center vent with four TBD' lines to the balloon. Grommeted cord connection points.

Tracking

A home built controller based on the Micro-Trak 300 from Byonics. The radio module was a Radiometrix HX1-144.390-3. The GPS was a high altitude gps from Argent Data systems (https://www.argentdata.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=144).

Imaging

A damaged but mostly funtional Canon PowerShot SD300 using the CHDK firmware.

Electronics

None other than the camera and tracker.
