This page is for short descriptions of basic shop info.
HackPGH (and the entire building) now has full garbage and recycling services from Iron City Express. Trash and Recycling are picked up weekly every Tuesday morning, unless there is a holiday. The lids must FULLY close on both dumpsters or else they will not be emptied!

City trash collection for the shop is Monday night for Tuesday morning pickup.
We have two dumpsters located in our Watson Street parking lot against the building. The larger dumpster on the right is for garbage, the slightly smaller dumpster on the left is for recycling.

<span style="background-color: red"><font color="yellow">'''Garbage'''</font></span> and <span style="background-color: blue"><font color="yellow">'''Recycling'''</font></span> should be deposited on the sidewalk at the front of the building on Fifth Avenue.
Trash should always be emptied as bags get full. However, the entire shop should be checked EVERY Monday evening for recycling and trash disposal.

Trash:
* Generally, most non-hazardous waste is permitted in the trash dumpster. We are allowed to throw out a reasonable amount of wood/metal shop scrap and broken furniture, but we must ensure that the lids can fully close after disposing of large and bulky items.
* Items NOT permitted in the trash dumpster:
** Hazardous, flammable, biohazardous, infectious, volatile, corrosive, and/or toxic materials.

In Pittsburgh, Recycling is collected every other week.  To check if this is recycling week go to:
Recycling:
* Recycling that goes in the blue container under the kitchenette counter:
** Cans (emptied out, crushed)
** Plastic bottles & jugs (emptied out, lids removed, crushed if possible)
* Recycling that goes in the wooden container to the left of the kitchenette lockers:
** Paper & cardboard
** Flatten all cardboard boxes and remove as much packing tape as possible!
** Pizza boxes and other food-related paper products CANNOT be recycled
** Note: As of 11/2023, Iron City Express is NOT accepting glass or loose plastic bags for recycling. Please place these items in the trash.

Special items:
* TVs, computer monitors, and other types of e-waste should be taken to Evolution E-Cycling in the South Side. It's a five-minute drive from HackPGH.

=== Shop Cleans ===

HackPGH has monthly "shop cleans" where members are encouraged to clean and organize together as a group activity. They are held on the last Sunday of every month starting at noon. This is an excellent way to meet people, get some volunteer hours in, learn more about where to find things in the shop, and generally help build the HackPGH community. Most of the time, food is ordered.  If you have schedule conflicts, it's recommended to clean/organize on your own, when you can.  See here for tips and suggestions for what to clean:  [[Cleaning and Shop Cleans]]

All sounds simple?  Except that there are several issues specific to HackPGH.

<li> In the shop there are four different kinds of trash barrels each with their own garbage bag.
Members are expected to clean up after themselves, EVERY time, ALL the time. Everyone is a volunteer at HackPGH, even the board members. We do not have a janitorial service. Some specific points and tips:
* Near the laser there is one large barrel that uses a black heavy contractor bag.
* Never leave out food, plates, cups, utensils, or tissues/napkins. Throw them away as soon as you are finished using them.
* Also in the shop is a smaller barrel that uses a black lighter weight plastic bag.
** Throw away plastic water bottles after use. Empty out any unused water into the sink, crush the bottle, and place it in the recycling bin.
* And in the kitchen there are two barrels that use white lighter weight bags.
** Consider refilling your empty water bottle with the filtered water from the fridge instead of getting a new bottle.
* There are barrels in both the upper and lower bathroom that uses this same white bag.
* If you make a mess in the bathroom, clean it up! Cleaning supplies are located under the sink in each bathroom.
* Finally, there are light blue translucent plastic bags for recycling.
* Clean and wipe down tables and other work surfaces when you are finished using them.

* When you are finished in the metal and/or woodworking shops, always use the shop vac or dust collector vac to clean up saw dust and other small shavings. Large scrap should be thrown out. If you cannot reach dust in small spaces, use the compressed air hose.
All of these bags are kept on the floor beneath the chrome rack in the kitchen area.</li>

<li> When put out garbage, all bags must be closed, and notably, the large contractor bags must not be too heavy for the garbage men to take.</li>

<li> We can’t put either the HackPGH trash bin or recycling bin out on the curb. All trash and recycling must be in plastic bags.</li>

Protip: You may want to load bags of garbage into a car, pickup, or something with wheels, to bring them up and around to the front of the building.

If you have any doubt that all has gone well, check to see if any bags are left after the pickup.  If anything is left, bring it back behind the building.

We would rather find these bags ourselves than have our landlord tell us.

Trash and Recycling

HackPGH (and the entire building) now has full garbage and recycling services from Iron City Express. Trash and Recycling are picked up weekly every Tuesday morning, unless there is a holiday. The lids must FULLY close on both dumpsters or else they will not be emptied!

We have two dumpsters located in our Watson Street parking lot against the building. The larger dumpster on the right is for garbage, the slightly smaller dumpster on the left is for recycling.

Trash should always be emptied as bags get full. However, the entire shop should be checked EVERY Monday evening for recycling and trash disposal.

Trash:

  • Generally, most non-hazardous waste is permitted in the trash dumpster. We are allowed to throw out a reasonable amount of wood/metal shop scrap and broken furniture, but we must ensure that the lids can fully close after disposing of large and bulky items.
  • Items NOT permitted in the trash dumpster:
    • Hazardous, flammable, biohazardous, infectious, volatile, corrosive, and/or toxic materials.

Recycling:

  • Recycling that goes in the blue container under the kitchenette counter:
    • Cans (emptied out, crushed)
    • Plastic bottles & jugs (emptied out, lids removed, crushed if possible)
  • Recycling that goes in the wooden container to the left of the kitchenette lockers:
    • Paper & cardboard
    • Flatten all cardboard boxes and remove as much packing tape as possible!
    • Pizza boxes and other food-related paper products CANNOT be recycled
    • Note: As of 11/2023, Iron City Express is NOT accepting glass or loose plastic bags for recycling. Please place these items in the trash.

Special items:

  • TVs, computer monitors, and other types of e-waste should be taken to Evolution E-Cycling in the South Side. It's a five-minute drive from HackPGH.
  • If you are unsure about what to do with an item, please contact a board member.

Check all of the following spots when taking out the trash on Monday evenings and during Shop Cleans:

  • Downstairs bathroom
  • Upstairs bathroom
  • Laser cutter
  • Electronics bench
  • 3D Printer Island
  • Resin printer (WEAR GLOVES)
  • Computers
  • Microwave
  • Under the kitchenette
  • Soft Arts
  • Center table
  • Wood and metal shop bins
    • Dust collector bags. If the bags are 2/3 full or more, empty them and replace the bags!
  • Blue Recycling bin (plywood lid) under the kitchenette counter (across from the lockers)
  • Wooden recycling container for cardboard located to the left of the kitchenette lockers.
