Shop Updates

  • We obtained liability insurance from Selective Insurance!
    • We are working on D&O Insurance currently
    • The Board voted and now, no children six and under are permitted in the shop.
      • Some of the members have argued that we should allow children in the shop. The Board will do more research about insurance, laws, etc. and we will report back to the members at the next meeting.
  • We have new donations coming in this Friday, including:
    • Soda Vending Machine
    • Tables (Techshop)
    • Lockers (Techshop)
      • Lockers give us 42% growth of member storage. Lockers will not take away bins! Bins AND lockers will both be used.
      • We need your help!!!
  • We have also received food and water donations from Tyler Mountain Spring Water and the Wilkins Township Shop n' Save.
    • We will be working on thank-you gifts for both of them.
  • Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
    • Maker Talks
    • First talk will be held by Caroline Moore at 9:30 AM on November 3rd
  • Old Table Saw
    • We need to sell it and we will be asking for between $250-$400
  • Outreach
    • Tustin Tot Lot
      • We have a open to the community meeting here on the 24th.
    • Millvale Village Green Air
      • Project is ongoing and being built
  • Shop Improvements
    • Currently, the Board of Directors handle Tool Training and Tours each Monday and Saturday evening.
      • We are stretched rather thin, so please help us out and volunteer to do tours/training!
    • Better Documentation
      • Steve Owens is working on this! Help him out! Contact him for details!
      • A suggestion was made that we form a committee to do this... Updates?
    • Reminder... Clean up after yourselves. This is a safety issue!
  • Storage Area
    • We need to start this back up.
    • Steve and Sean have ideas for how to best utilize and organize the space.
  • We have a new large sign that displays HackPGH's Member Privileges and Responsibilities.
    • Show your support! Sign the sign!
  • Tools
    • BIG CNC
      • It's back up thanks to Sean, Phil, and Bob!
      • It does not yet have end stops, so keep your projects limited to 30 x 30
    • 3D Printers
      • New powder printer works well!
      • You can print out of sugar or very fine grain plaster
      • See Chad for training.
  • Power Racing
    • We need to find a place for them.
    • It was suggested that we put one of them on the wall in the "lounge" area, but we are entertaining other ideas.
  • RFID Updates
    • Steve Owens is working on it.

Project Updates

  • We want to teach new classes, including:
    • fixing broken items instead of buying new items. We could potentially bring in new members from Pitt's engineering school.
    • Classes that bring more money to both the teacher and HackPGH
  • Diversity
    • A member brought up that there have been some "mansplaining" issues. We need to treat all of our members with respect. LISTEN to each other and LET THEM FINISH SPEAKING.
    • We need to take steps to reach out to our black neighbors in our Uptown and Hill District community.
    • Becky started a diversity committee; contact her if you wish to join!
    • Meta Mesh is doing surveys about broadband exclusivity - contact Adam Longwill or Becky Zajdel if you want to help them!
