The following note has been added at the top of the [New Member Orientation] page.

Per the main site page and to comply with recommended healthcare precautions, until further notice '''all members must use the HackPgh website scheduler''' when accessing the shop.  This is for access to '''all areas''', not just to the tools where scheduling is normally required (the laser cutter, etc).  The purpose is to make sure we don't have too many people congregating in the shop at once, which would increase risk of infection.

As the message on the main site page says:

<blockquote>
Since Allegheny County is now in Yellow phase of the lockdown,
HackPGH is TENTATIVELY OPEN by reservation.
Members only, no public events or tours yet.
For details click here or see the "Reserve spaces" tab in the member's section.

Coronavirus Policies

Policies and procedures for safety in the time of coronavirus.

  • Masks and social distancing required at all times
  • Members must schedule shop time on HackPgh website (https://members.hackpgh.org/reserve-spaces )
  • Maximum 4 people in dirty side at any one time
  • Maximum 4 people in clean side at any one time
  • Wash your hands.
  • Clean up before and after yourself.

Bear in mind the goal and rationale here is to remain open as safely as possible. If it becomes apparent that this is not practical, the board will have no choice but to shut down HackPGH shop access.

Masks and Social Distancing

Members are required to wear masks and maintain appropriate social distance when in the shop.

Follow the CDC guidelines and stay at least 6 feet away from anyone else in the shop (see below about scheduling and maximum number of people in the shop).

Members Must Schedule Shop Time

To ensure that members maintain proper social distancing and do not crowd the shop, members must schedule shop time using the HackPGH website.

The scheduler is at https://members.hackpgh.org/reserve-spaces

Note that if your dues haven't been paid, that link may get you a 403 error.

Please limit yourself to two-hour chunks if possible.

Remember to give yourself time to clean before and after!

The scheduler now has scheduling for 8 slots, 3 for high use equipment (laser cutter, large CNC and welding table) and 5 more as general floating slots. Use your common sense and maintain social distance, etc.

Maximum 4 and 4 People

Up to 4 people can be in the "dirty" side of the shop at any one time.

Up to 4 people can be in the "clean" side of the shop at any one time.

To avoid inadvertent dangerous crowding, members are required to use the scheduling app to schedule their time in the shop, based on what area they're going to be working in.

Wash Your Hands

Wash your hands when entering the shop, to minimize carrying any contamination into the shop.

Wash your hands after using equipment, in case the person before you didn't clean up properly.

Follow CDC recommendations for washing your hands -- use hot water, plenty of soap, and soap up for at least 20 seconds.

The COVID-19 coronavirus is an RNA payload in a shell made of essentially grease. Hot water and soap will dissolve that shell and the coronavirus will fall apart and "deactivate".

Sanitize Before and After

There are half a dozen cleaning kits located all over the shop. They are small baskets containing spray bottles of sanitizer and paper towels.

Sanitize equipment before using it, in case the person before you didn't clean up properly.

Sanitize equipment after using it, to protect the person after you. Pretend you just committed murder and need to remove all fingerprints and DNA, using the cleaning kits.

Sanitize other stuff too -- remember, HackPGH is a member-driven organization. Generally speaking, sanitize "high touch" areas, like:

  • doorknobs
  • faucets
  • toilet handle
  • vending machine
  • refrigerator handle
